3/11/20- After passing the test and officially becoming certified, we were all feeling pretty confident in our climbing abilities. However, after Jacob Hering, a dedicated rock climber at UNL, shared some of his experiences involving both indoor and outdoor climbing, our crew realized that we've only gained a small understanding of this climbing sport.

ABBY
It was very eye-opening to hear the experiences of an avid climber who not only enjoys the challenge in a climbing gym but also likes to challenge himself in the outdoors. Road tripping out to Utah to climb and camp under the stars sounds amazing! I do realize, however, that there would be a lot more risk involved with outdoor climbing than with the safety of the indoor climbing gym I have gotten used to. I also didn’t realize the toll climbing can take on a dedicated climber’s body or that you should ‘warm-up’ before climbing. That does make sense, though, as it is just another sport.

I thought it was a really interesting interview. I thought it was very insightful how he shared his personal experiences especially his injuries because it shows the viewer how real and dangerous this sport can be. He explained the wonderful benefits of rock climbing and how he shared his experiences with his friends. I thought it was a great connection to make for our Climbing Crew. It’s better when you do it together!

For me, I personally enjoy doing interviews on people. Not only do you learn something about that person, you also learn something new for yourself as well. I also learned that climbing outside is a whole different beast than climbing at the OAC. While doing the interview, I liked how our interviewee didn’t make the interview boring, he kept it interesting and he really enjoyed telling us his personal experiences like when he took his trip to Moab, Utah relaxing under the stars seems like a pretty cool night of climbing. Lastly, he gave us tons of advice for when we’re climbing and how to warm up properly and to avoid injuries as well. Overall, this was a real cool experience.

This dude is dope. I would love to climb outside with him and see him in his element, he obviously knows what he’s doing. My favorite part of the interview was when he was saying how much Rock Climbing pushes him, not just physically, but mentally. I hope I get to experience even half of the adventures he’s experienced with climbing. I don’t know how well I would do climbing outside if I’m being honest.

I really enjoyed the interview. I feel like not only having a group input but someone from the outside to tell us their personal experience gives us a different point of view. I thought the guy was extreme and really cool from telling us how he climbs at the OAC to traveling to climb. I realized I loved working out and climbing at the OAC was one way of working out, but when he told the crazy stories of REAL climbing it scared me a bit. The bumps and bruises he had were real climbing. I feel like if I climbed for the first time outside the OAC I’d be scared to death, because mistakes could be costly. Traveling though and seeing different places would be so much fun!
